[ Autographs ] Franklin Buchanan 1800-1874 Confederate admiral who commanded the ironclad C.S.S. Virginia (Merrimac) and was severely wounded in the famous engagement. D.S. 2pp. sm. folio, onboard the U.S.S. Vincennes, [At Sea], Mar. 25-28, 1843 An interesting log book extract from the Vincennes, likely written in the navigator's hand or that of a mate, describing weather conditions, work undertaken onboard, the vessels' course and sea conditions, and so on. After theentry for March 25th, Buchanan writes: "Ex[amine]d Frank'n Buchanan Commander" A scarce Confederate navy signature, in fine condition.
