[ Autographs ] GEORGE WASHINGTON CARVER (1864 - 1943) Black-American botanist and the son of slaves, Carver worked his way through school to become a leader in agricultural research and found hundreds of products made possible by the cultivation of peanuts and sweet potatoes. Fine content A.L.S. "G. W. Carver" on a sheet of imprinted Tuskegee Normal and Industrial letterhead, 1 1/2pp, 4to., Tuskegee, July 6, 1933, to Ford Davis, a white student of botany whom Carver hadbefriended. In part: "....I can see by your letter that I must see youbefore long...See that you say [sic] is only too true, sadly true, butremember dear that we cannot break any fundamental law without suffering in some way. This holds true, dear, for the Physical, Mentaland Spiritual man. If we disobey the laws of health repeatedly, just expect to be sick. If we do not cultivate the brains, expect to be simple minded, and think crooked. If we nurture religion of hate for our fellow men we are apt to do everything to them except the right thing. As we sow, so we must reap. Dear, do not let the condition of the world upset you unduly...". Two file holes at the top margin affect several letters of the text, otherwise very good.
