Description:

[ Autographs ] GEORGE WASHINGTON (1732 - 1799) First President of theUnited States and commander of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. Rare partly-printed D.S. "Go: Washington" as President, 1p. folio vellum, Philadelphia, Aug. 27, 1795, a military commission appointing Thomas Butler as a "Lieutenant Colonel Commandant of the Fourth Sub Legion". Also signed by TIMOTHY PICKERINGas Secretary of War. Document exhibits some cocking and the usual folds, one of which crosses the "s" in Washington's signature, light soiling, otherwise in very good condition with extremely bright and sharp engravings at top and bottom. Butler (d. 1805) served in the American Revolution, commanding the 3rd Pennsylvania Regiment until his retirement in 1781 and later served with Arthur St. Clair in Ohio where he was wounded when his forces were surprised and defeated by the Indians under Blue Jacket in 1791. Military appointments by Washington are quite scarce, the last one selling in our auction for E18,700 in 1998.
