Description:

[ Autographs ] GEORGE G. MEADE (1815 - 1872) Union major general who commanded brilliantly at Gettysburg, leading to a Union victory and the turning point of the Civil War. A.L.S., 3pp. 8vo., [Philadelphia] Nov. 29 [1871] to a fellow general concerning an escort for Dom Pedro Emperor of Brazil, who was to visit the city for America's centennialcelebrations. In part: "...It has been decided not to ask the Divisionto parade but we will be pleased to have the P. City troops as an escort to H.I.H. and three regiments of infantry as Guards of Honor, one to receive H.I.H. when he leaves the Centennial...the three to actin the same capacity at Independence Hall...". Meade did not survive to witness the festivities, as he died within a year of the writing ofthis letter. Some offsetting in blank area of last page, otherwise very good.
