[ Autographs ] FIRST U.S. TREATY WITH A FOREIGN POWER An interesting, uncommon pamphlet, 8pp. 8vo., in Frenc, a copy of the first treaty ever made between the United States and a foreign power. This treaty with France, entitled: "Treaty of Friendship and Commerce between The King and the United States", dated Feb. 6, 1778, was negotiated by Franklin, and stated that it was: "agreed that if war should break outbetween France and Great Britain during the Continuance of the American War, France and America would make it a common cause". Each leaf of the treaty is inlaid at the edges into thinpaper, allowing both sides of the printed leaf to appear. This particular edition, ( Paris, Chez P.G. Simon, Imprimeur De Parliament, 1778) is supposed to be the first edition of this landmark treaty. An important document, very good to fine.
