[ Autographs ] DOUGLAS MACARTHUR (1880 - 1964) American general and Allied Supreme Commander in the Pacific in World War II, accepted thesurrender of Japan and was later dismissed by Truman for advocating an invasion of China. Exceedingly rare fine association war-date A.L.S. "MacA" 1p. 4to., on Lennon's Hotel letterhead, Brisbane, [n.d., ca. 1944-45], in dark pencil to Admiral William Halsey who was undoubtedlyat sea. In full: "To Admiral Halsey: Please express to Gen. [Oscar W.]Griswold and to the officers and men involved my appreciation of theirdetermined stand at Trookina[?]. MacA".. Griswold commanded troops in some of the hardest-fought battles of the war, including New Georgia and in the Luzon campaign. The lot also includes three vintage 10" x 8" photos, one showing Halsey and MacArthur regarding a map of the South Pacific, another shows MacArthur with natives in the background,the third shows Nimitz, MacArthur and F.D.R. The letter has a 3/4" tear in the blank right margin but is otherwise very good. This is thefirst war-date A.L.S. we have seen from MacArthur's hand.
