Description:

[ Autographs ] Daniel H. Hill 1821-1889 Confederate major general and brother-in-law of Stonewall Jackson, fought at Big Bethel, in the Seven Days', and defended Richmond following Lee's defeat at Gettysburg. Fine content war-date A.L.S. as "Husband", 1p. 4to. on blue paper, Richmond, July 7, 1863 Only days after the decisive battle at Gettysburg, Hill writes a despairing letter to his wife. In part: "My Dear Wife, The Yankees advanced in two directions on Richmond & were repulsed in both. I hardly think they will try again. I do not expose myself rashly. I have never courted death and have only been indifferent to life when I thought I was not loved. The news is very unfavorable this morning. Lee defeated and Bragg retreating. I fear that God will chastise us till love of money and speculation are driven out from us. My Avery is much distressed about the death of his brother, does not know whether it is Isaac or Martin. All my staff are fine... Don't let the children forget my birthday... I want to start for Goldsboro... God bless you all..." Folds and a few lighttoned spots, some text a tad light but entirely legible. A fine letter!
