[ Autographs ] DANIEL BUTTERFIELD (1831 - 1901) Union major general who commanded a brigade at Bull Run and led a corps in the desperate assault on Marye's Heights. Butterfield is also credited with writing "Taps". War-date A.E.S on the verso of an A.L.S. 1p.4to., Headquarters17th N.Y., Halls Hill, Dec. 16, 1861, in which Colonel Henry S. Lansing requests certain action regarding promotions. On the verso Butterfield writes: "Approved and respectfully forwarded, Danl. Butterfield, Brig. Genl.." with an additional A.E.S. of Brig. Gen. FITZ JOHN PORTER (1822-1901), who also approves and forwards the request. Very good.
