[ Autographs ] CONFEDERATE APPOMATTOX PAROLE An exceedingly rare partly-printed Appomattox parole issued to Private Nathanial Black ofthe 37th North Carolina. The document, slightly larger than bank check bears the printed heading "Appomatox Court House, Va.", April 10, 1865, on the day after Lee's surrender, and states that Black is: "...a Paroled Prisoner of the Army of Northern Virginia, has permission togo to his home, and there remain undisturbed...", and is signed by thecommanding officer at the bottom. On the verso of the document is an endorsement dated April 22, 1865, stating that the paroled soldier hadbeen issued rations. Appomattox paroles, the most desirable of Confederate paroles, are exceedingly rare. This example has some soiling and a bit of uneven foxing, mostly in the margins away from the text, and two clean fold splits, one through the signature. Overall, about very good.
