[ Autographs ] Clement Biddle 1740 - 1814 "The Quaker General" organized and led the "Quaker Blues" against the British and fought under Nathaniel Greene as well. Fine content war-date A.L.S. 2pp. folio, Philadelphia, Oct. 22, 1780 to fellow general Nathaniel Greene Biddle submits a detailed report of the Southern military status to Greene, who had but a week earlier been appointed by Washington to salvage the situation in the South. Biddle's letter reads, in part: ,..we are often disappointed by relying on news coming from Congress.. Col Ferguson with about 1400 British were advancing through Charlotte County when the militia collected from different parts of North Carolina under Gen. [Thomas] Sumpter [sic] .... Sumter detached1600, on horseback, who came up with the Enemy, defeated them, killing upwards of 150 on the field, made 810 prisoners, & took 150 waggons, a quantity of ammunition, & 1500 stand of arms - Ferguson was killed in the action - I understand Gen. [Horatio] Gates with his Army was at Hillsborough - Two of the prizes taken by Capt. Young on the Saratoga are in the River - I am happy to hear you are to go to the South & I hope I have the pleasure of seeing you on your way through the city...' Greene's reputation was made in the Carolinas, and he no doubt gained essential accurate information from Biddle's report. Lightly toned, otherwise very good.
