[ Autographs ] (British Prisoners In VIRGInIA) James Wood (1750 - 1813 Colonel in the Virginia line and superintendent of all British prisoners held in Virginia, later serving as Governor of the state. Historic content war date A.L.S. 2pp. sm. folio, Winchester, Feb. 2, 1782 to Gen. George Washington concerning the deteriorating condition of British prisoners. In part: '...Since the capture of Lord Cornwallis' Army I perceive among the prisoners the Greatest Disgust to the British Service, Particularly the Germans... have made proposals to me of serving two years without Pay in Our Army, to be allowed the [?] of remaining in the Country, and becoming Citizens; many of whom would be valuable Acquisitions to any Country... hardly a Probability of their being wanted as Object of Exchange... The Prisoners have been removed from here Agreeable to General [Benjamin]Lincoln's Order, except the sick and those entirely naked, amounting in the whole to nearly three hundred; they are without provisions, except of some corn which won't last them more than Eight days... I have the liberty of writing Mr. Robert Morris On the subject, urging the Necessity of a Temporary Provision being made for them..." Lightly toned, otherwise very good.
