[ Autographs ] Alexander R. Lawton 1818-1896 Confederate brigadier general who led with distinction at Cedar Mountain, Second Bull Run, and Antietam, where he was severely wounded. Rare war-date A.D.S. 1p.oblong 8vo., Richmond, May 4, 1864 on a partly-printed Southern Telegraph Companies telegram form to Major H. T Massengale in Atlanta In full: "You can impress any warehouse room. But urge the Commissary not to bring forward more supplies than you can store. A. R. Lawton, Q.M. General". Atlanta was besieged by Sherman at the time and of course all possible space was needed for the ordnance and supplies being rushed to the front. Fine condition.
