[ Autographs ] Alexander R. Lawton Interesting A.L.S. 4pp. 4to., Hancock Barracks, Houlton, Me., May 19, 1840 to cadet C. P. Kingsburyat West Point. Lawton writes, in part: " '..Did I ever conceive, or did any man, that this could possibly be my abiding place - out of the reach of civilization... Coarser living than at West Point ... I can not get even a mattress to sleep on... why were we sent here? Wasit to perform any of the legitimate duties of a soldier to his country? Not at all, but to minister to the corrupt desires of an intriguing administration. Mr. van Buren understands the state of feeling in Maine in relation to this Boundary Question, and knows that unless he shows some disposition to assist them in their unlawfulexcursions, his jig is up'...the people are prepared for humbuggery &can't be deceived..." Fine condition, tipped to a larger sheet.
