[ Autographs ] ABRAHAM LINCOLN (1809 - 1865) Sixteenth President of the United States who led the Union through the Civil War and emancipated the slaves, assassinated. Important D.S. "Abraham Lincoln"as President, 1p. folio parchment, Washington, Feb. 6, 1862, an ornate partly-printed appointment of Horatio Gouverneur Wright to serve as "Brigadier General of Volunteers". Boldly signed in black ink at bottom, also signed by Secretary of War EDWIN M. STANTON. A clean foldpasses through Lincoln's signature, Stanton's signature is a tad light light soiling, overall very good. Horatio G. Wright was one of Lincoln's better generals, serving from First Bull Run all the way to Appomattox. He commanded a brigade in the S.C. expedition, fought in Florida and Secessionville, and led the 1st Div. at Gettysburg and Mine Run. He later assumed command of the VI Corps and led it at the Wilderness, Spotsylvania (where he was wounded), Cold Harbor, Petersburg, and in the Carolinas.
