[ Autograph ] John Quincy Adams 1767 -1848 Sixth President of the United States, Secretary of State under Monroe who principally formulated the Monroe Doctrine Interesting, early A.L.S. "John Q. Adams' as Minister to Prussia, lp. 4to., Berlin, May 31, 1800 to Mr. Pitcairn, American Consul in Hamburg. Adams thanks his associate forsending him a quantity of biscuits, wine and tea. he then discusses an appointment, in part: "...I have so great a regard and esteem for Mr. Rogers, that even without your recommendation nothing could give me greater pleasure than to have it in my power to serve him I shouldfeel the same disposition to serve any person with a recommendation from you - But with regard to the office of the Consul at Bordeaux, Ihave already been requested by another Gentleman for whatever my recommendation would be worth and have given it some months ago..."
