[ Autograph ] James Buchanan A.D.S., about ten lines at the bottom of an A.L.S. 2pp. 4to of William Smith 1796-1887 , at the time Governorof Virginia and later a Confederate major general. Smith pens a letter on introduction for G. W. Carr, who Smith claims '...has a strong taste for the bugle notes pomp & circumstance of glorious war.. 'At the conclusion, Buchanan adds, in part: '...[Carr's father] is one of the truest & most unwavering Democrats in the State recommended by Mr. Jefferson Randolph to whom he has been known sincechildhood peculiarly fitted for a cavalry officer he would do credit to the corps...' Fine condition.
