[ Autograph ] James Buchanan A.D.S. as Secretary of the Navy, five lines at the bottom of a letter to him, lp. 4to., [n.p.], May 4, 1836Samuel Edwards writes Buchanan requesting an midshipman's appointment for a relative, "an Orphan boy, entirely dependent upon his uncle for support...' Buchanan responds: "I concur in the foregoing recommendation: & should be much gratified if young Mr. Edwards could obtain a Midshipman's warrant his relations are highly respectable & influential; I feel confident from what I have heard of him that he would become a useful & valuable officer in the Navy.
