[ Autograph ] Abraham Lincoln 1809-1865 Sixteenth President of the United States who led the Union through the Civil War and emancipated the slaves, assassinated. Exceedingly rare combination of three war- date endorsements, those of Lincoln, his successor Andrew Johnson andLincoin's Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton, removed from a document and all three on the same page! The endorsements measure 3.5in x 7. 25in and were removed from a petition sent to Johnson and ultimately Lincoln and Stanton by some Tennessee neighbors of an imprisoned Confederate officer. The verso reads in part: "'..[We are] acquaintances of Mr. R. E. Dougass who is now a prisoner at Rock Island Barracks No. 69 [and] beg leave to state that the said [officer] was once in the Confederate army resigned his office and remained at home for ten months quietly pursuing his business..." This letter was sent to Johnson, then Military Governor of Tennessee, who writes: "Executive Dept. Nashville, Ten. June 20, 1864 I have made myself acquainted with the facts in this case, and recommend it as a lit case for Executive Pardon Most respectfully submitted - Andrew Johnson Mil. Gov. Tennessee' ' Johnson then sent the letter toLincoln, who writes: "Let this man take the oath of Dec. 8th, 1863 and be discharged on bail to Gov. Johnson. A. Lincoln June 28, 1864".Finally, Lincoln sends the request to Stanton, who writes: "Referred to Col. Hoffman to execute the order. E. M. Stanton" Of course, Johnson would later become Lincoln's Vice President, keeping the office for just over a month until Lincoln was assassinated and Johnson himself became President. A very rare association of presidents, never before seen by Us.
