[ Autograph ] Abraham Lincoln Fine A.D.S. as President on the verso of a rare one page letter from Union Brigadier General Michael Corcoran 1827 -1863 who led the 69th N.Y. and Irish Legion at Bull Run, and was killed at Fairfax in 1863 On his "Corcoran's Irish Legion" letterhead, Suffolk, Va., Jan. 26, 1863, Corcoran writes to Lincoln requesting a position for a young officer. In part: '...I made a request to have Lieut. Morgan Doheny of the 42nd N. Y Vol. appointed in the Us. Army Your Excellency was then pleased to say that you would send his name to the Sec. of War he resigned his position in the volunteer service and is out of employment his motherand a sister are mainly dependent on him for support..." he signs in full, adding rank as "Brig. Genl. U.S.V." On the verso Lincoln takes action. he writes: "I would like for Gen. Corcoran to be obliged in this case. What regiment can the young man enlist in, so as to have an appointment, if there be any? Sec. of War, please see Father Dillon. A. Lincoln Jan. 28, 1863" Very light toning along a vertical fold at left edge of text, otherwise very good condition.
