ARTHUR WELLESLEY WELLINGTON
(1769 - 1852) British general and statesman, called the "Iron Duke", he crushed French forces under Napoleon at the battle of Waterloo. Fine A.L.S. "Wellington" 2pp. 4to., Stratfield Saye, Apr. 19, 1851, to Edgar A. Bowring. In the midst of the opening of the Great Exhibition in Hyde Park, he writes in part: "...I had the honour of receiving...your letter...in which you have informed me that the Commissioners for the Exhibition of 1851 were desirous of having placed a large East Indian Tent and thirty small Tents sent from Tunis for Exhibition as an Arab Encampment...I consider it my duty to give my sanction to any arrangement for the promotion of the Exhibition which Her Majesty's Commissioners may think proper to propose...I venture to recommend that the fence by which the Encampment may be surrounded may be made as strong as may be practicable with only one opening or mode of access...". Above his letter, Wellington has copied out Bowring's letter to him, which in particular mentions "a very large and costly East Indian Tent ".Very good condition.
