Description:

ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE
(1859 - 1930) English author and spiritualist remembered for his creation of the immortal Sherlock Holmes and his friend Dr. Watson. A.L.S. 1p. 8vo., Cape Town, South Africa, Nov. 23 [n.y.], to a fellow author, in part: "...Your letter opened so many questions that I cannot hope to answer it in my present tumultuous situation. Such a book as Rev. Drayton Thomas 'Life Beyond Death' would help you most but all such books are hard to get over here. We have no idea of what sort of a medicine man Isaiah talked about. I have never known a modern medicine...matter but I have known him heal many sore hearts and convert agnostics (like myself) to a belief in the divine...". For three months in 1900, during which he wrote this letter, Doyle served as a senior physician to British troops fighting in the Boer War. Knowing well the war, he wrote The Great Boer War that was followed, in 1902, by the publication The War in South Africa: Its Causes and Conduct. This widely-read book successfully altered public opinion about the war in Britain and earned Doyle his peerage in the process. Methodist minister Charles Drayton Thomas was a supporter of spiritualism and devoted many hours to the psychical research from which he published numerous books and articles, including Life After Death with Evidence (1928). Very slight staining to verso, very good condition.
