ARCHIVE AND MEDAL GROUPING OF MAX ZINTL, ADOLF HITLER'S PERSONAL CO-PILOT
MAX ZINTL Co-pilot and flight engineer to HANS BAUR, the personal pilot to German dictator Adolf Hitler. An important grouping including a personal medal presented by Adolf Hitler, flight map, photographs and documents originating from MAZ ZINTL, who piloted Adolf Hitler's personal aircraft alongf with chief pilot Hans Baur. Offered here is Zintl's unique silver badge bearing the initials of Hitler's squadron 'Fliegerstaffel des Fuhrers' beside to an eagle's head, 1.25 in. dia. The verso is hallmarked '900' with the label 'GES GESCH'. Just beneath this is engraved: 'Meinem Treuen Max Zintl', the italicized date '3.3.1942' and Hitler's facsimile signature. Also included is a presentation leather folder embossed with one of the planes within Hitler's personal squadron, 12 x 16 in. (closed), bearing an image of a Ju-52 in flight with the designation 'D-2490'. This aircraft was assigned to the 'Fliegerstaffel des Fuhrers' from 1933 to 1941 under the name 'Lufthansa Gustav Doerr', named after the World War I flying ace who went on to become one of the world's first airline pilots. Tucked within this leather folder is an air navigation chart of central Europe, 26.25 x 24 in., ca. 1938, marked with hand-inked pink lines, possibly indicating the travel routes of this particular plane, as well as the location of various airfields and what are apparently various air districts or local areas of air or radio control. Various prominent cities, including Berlin, Prague, Vienna, Frankfurt, and Nuremberg, have also been marked with a blue, upward-facing arrow. Three notable tears at the centerfolds, various splits at the edges have been repaired with archival tape, could benefit from proper backing. This lot is also sold with his five award documents for the following medals: Finnish Cross of Liberty with Swords, Fourth Class, dated June 9, 1942, bearing the facsimile signature of CARL GUSTAF VON MANNERHEIM; Finnish Order of the White Rose, Knight's Class with Swords, dated July 10, 1942; Order of the Star of Romania, Knight's Class, dated Aug. 8, 1941; Bulgarian Order of Military Merit, dated 1943; and Bulgarian Order for Civil Merit, dated 1940. Also sold with two carbon documents, each 1p. 4to., the first being a list of the call signs of the various types of government aircraft and the radio stations used by government planes, bearing also a list on the verso including 'war machine', 'news', and others. The second document is a largely untranslated report on radio beacons. Various edge tears and one spot of loss, else very good. Sold with two war-date photographs. An fabulous grouping including the rarest medal one could find. The color photograph of Zintl in the cockpit of an F.d.F. aircraft is for demonstration purposes only and not included.

Shipments are sent via FedEx and DHL (for most overseas shipments) or FedEx Ground at the auctioneer's option. Due to complications from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we will ship with USPS Priority Mail only if the buyer submits their request to us in writing and accepts responsibility for delayed shipments. Signature is always required, unless other arrangements are made. Handling and shipping charges will be added to the invoice in one entry. Buyers should be aware that large, framed, fragile or odd shaped items can incur substantial shipping and packing charges. International shipments are invoiced by DIMENSIONAL weight, not the item weight. Customers who supply their own courier account number will still be charged a handling fee.
