Description:

ANTI-MUSSOLINI NAPLES BOMBING POLITICAL CARTOON
Original oversize war-date political cartoon by Washington Post cartoonist LEBARON COAKLEY (1902-1976), an original pen and ink image on heavy 15 x 20 in. stock titled: 'ACES OVER DUCE'. It shows a worried Benito Mussolini afloat in Naples Bay, looking up as American B-24 Liberators rain bombs on the Naples docks, one bomb headed for Mussolini directly. It is labeled: 'ROUT OF ITALIAN FLEET BY U.S. FLIERS - IN FIRST MEDITERRANEAN ENGAGEMENT'. Signed by Coakley at bottom right and inscribed and signed again at the bottom. A clean 4 in. tear intrudes from lower right margin to Mussolini's right hand, mended on the verso, else very good. On 4 December 1942, massed B-24s struck three cruisers at Naples, the Muzio Attendolo, Eugenio di Savoia, and the Raimondo Montecuccoli, but also many houses, churches, hospitals, and offices, including the Palazzo delle Poste and the area of the Porta Nolana.
