Description:

613. ANSWERING AN APPEAL FOR THE SOUTHERN VICTIMS OF BRITISH ATROCITIES A war-date L.S., 2pp. 4to., Lancaster, Penn., Sept. 21, 1781, in which Pennsylvania patriot JASPER YEATES, who would later be appointed by Washington to settle the Whiskey Rebellion, and fellow patriot George Ross (likely a relative of the signer George Ross, who had died in 1778) respond to a petition to raise money for the recent victims of the British Army and their Loyalist and Indian allies in Georgia and South Carolina. In part: "...We concur with you in sentiment respecting the unfortunate persons whose immediate sufferings justly lay claim to the public attention... we have promoted a subscription in this borough and now send you ...the monies by us collected. We have also wrote circular letters to our friends in different parts of this county requesting their assistance towards carrying the humane intentions of Congress into execution...The scarcity of hard cash amongst us, & the heavy taxes lately paid are great impediments in the country to many who would cheerfully contribute towards the relief of the distressed citizens of South Carolina and Georgia. We wish it had lain in our power to have remitted you a much larger sum than what we send you..." At this point the war in the South, where Loyalist strength was stronger than in the North, had begun to resemble a bitter civil war more than a revolution. Many now displaced civilians in both Georgia and South Carolina had lost their homes to fires set by Loyalist forces. Very good. $200-300
