Description:

ANDREW JOHNSON
(1808-1875) Seventeenth President of the United States who came to office following the death of Abraham Lincoln. A squabble with Stanton along with his Reconstruction policies led to an impeachment by Congress. Excellent, very rare D.S. "Andrew Johnson" as President, 1p. 8 1/4" x 3 1/4", Washington, Jan. 10, 1866 making a $552.76 payment to "Wm. Slade" and endorsed by Slade on the verso. This check is particularly interesting in that Slade was a freed slave who had served Abraham Lincoln as his private messenger and after the assassination, served Johnson as his Chief Steward, the first person to ever hold that post. Very good to fine condition.
