(1808-1875) Seventeenth President of the United States who came to office following the death of Abraham Lincoln. A squabble with Stanton along with his Reconstruction policies led to an impeachment by Congress. Partly-printed D.S. "Andrew Johnson as President, 1p. folio on vellum, Washington, April 23, 1865. Only eight days after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, the new president brevets James McNight of 5th U.S. Artillery to "...to the rank of Major BY BREVET... for gallant and meritorious services in the battles of Spotsylvania, Coal [sic., Cold] Harbor and Cedar Creek, Virginia...". Countersigned by Johnson's soon-to-be nemesis, Secretary of War, EDWIN STANTON. With very dark and rich engravings at top and bottom. Usual folds, some light cockling, else very good to fine condition. From the B. T. Fredericks Collection.
