ANDREW JOHNSON
(1808 - 1875) Seventeenth President of the United States who came to office following the death of Abraham Lincoln. A squabble with Stanton along with his Reconstruction policies led to an impeachment by Congress. A good grouping of material concerning the Civil War service of First Lt. Charles W. Dodge, serving with the 22nd U.S. Colored Infantry which fought with distinction at Deep Bottom and before Petersburg. Included as a partly-printed D.S. as President, 1p. folio parchment, Washington, May 7, 1865 (just three weeks after Lincoln's death), an appointment of Dodge as Second Lieutenant in the Veteran Reserve Corps., co-signed by Secretary of War EDWIN STANTON. Some edge wear, with a fold and some lightening to Johnson's signature, still quite good. Sold with: a State of New Hampshire testimonial honoring Dodge for his service (damaged), his Jan. 11, 1864 appointment as First Lieutenant of the 22nd USCT, mounted and a bit light, and Special Order No. 205 mustering-out Dodge in 1868. Four pieces.
