Description:

712. JOHN A. ANDREW (1818-1867) American politician, Civil War governor of Massachusetts, remembered as the creator of numerous black regiments. A good war-date A.E.S. "John A. Andrew", [Boston], Nov. 18, 1864 docketing a, 4pp. 4to., letter written by a certain G. A. Wainwright, Poughkeepsie, N.Y., Oct. 10, 1864 to Gov. Andrews seeking "aid for old classmate and friend...in a clerkship at Washington...". Chagrined Andrews dockets the letter, reading, in part: "This letter is from a classmate of mine at Bowdoin College...it shocks and humiliates me to find him (always of a temperament too little hopeful and aggressive) applying at this time of his life for such employment. But since it is so. I would not fail to gain for him a clerkship in one of the Departments if I can...even by going to Washington on foot. I wish Gen. Pierce & Col. Browne...make it a business to speak with Mr. Fessenden...of the Treasury and with Mr. McLellan of the P. O., with Mr. Stanton and Mr. Dana of the War Departments and with Genl Meigs of the Q. M. Bureau-and find a clerkship for him if it possibly can be done...". Interestingly, the endorsement is in the personal hand of Andrews' military secretary Albert P. Browne who was the man who suggested to Gen. Sherman to give Lincoln the city of Savannah, Georgia as a Christmas present. Worthy of further research to see if Wainwright ever got his request. Light soiling, else very good. $75-100
