713. EDWARD D. BAKER (1811-1861) American lawyer and politician, later Brigadier General killed at Ball's Bluff in a disastrous assault while commanding a brigade. Unusual A.L.S. "E. D. Baker" 1p. 4to., Galina, Oct. 28, 1849, written while a Member of Congress to N.H. Ridgely, regarding "the Half Breed case". In part: "...The record on the Duboyer case, has just been transmitted to me...I want to know what Counsel are employed there, and to suggest if none are...as I have another important case from Iowa (the half breed case) in which I am authorizing...counsel...". Ink smudges throughout, otherwise very good condition, with integral address leaf. Signed again on leaf "Free E. D. Baker MC". With a scarce fort cancellation, very good. $100-150
