ANDRE MASSENA(1758 - 1817) French marshal under Napoleon who, despite a brilliant career, was unable to drive the English from Spain and was removed, joined Napoleon during the Hundred Days, and was Napoleon's only Jewish marshal. Scarce A.L.S. "Prince d'Essling" 1p. 4to., [n.p., n.d. but after 1810], in French to an unnamed Count, in part: "...for the letter you did the honor to write me announcing that the General Society of the Shipwrecked have conferred on me the title of honorary President. It is with pleasure and gratitude that I accept the title...". Light age toning, mounting strip to verso, overall very good condition .
