Description:

62. AMERICAN REVOLUTION A fine group of five items including MOSES HAZEN (1733-1803) Scarce war-date partial D.S. "Moses Hazen Brigr Genl." on a 9" x 3 1/2". slip, [Newburgh, June 1783]. The slip was once the bottom of a folio size discharge paper granted to Stephen Lyon, who was also "honored with the BADGE OF MERIT for Six Years faithful Service". Just above this slip (at the right) would have been George Washington's signature. Sadly, a vandal decided dividing the document up would be a better plan than keeping the document whole. Offered together with JOHN ARMSTRONG (1717-1795), A.D.S. 1p. oblong 8vo., Carlisle, Feb. 17, 1763 ordering "Charles McSwain personally appear at the Next Court of Oyer in Terminer..."; JAMES EWING (1736-1806), A.D.S. 1p. oblong 4to., Philadelphia, Apr 1, 1783, and ordering David Rittenhouse to pay John McDowell "...for attendance in Council...", countersigned by Robert Morris crony JOHN NICHOLSON; JOHN GUNBY (1745-1807), partly-printed D.S. 1p. oblong 8vo., Annapolis, July 31, 1783 granting a leave of absence to "Francis Land Private of the first Maryland Regiment..."; and JAMES E. HOWARD (1752-1857), A.L.S. 1p. 4to., Belvedere, Jan 2, 1804 asking the recipient to "deliver the enclosed letters to Mr. Lowndes and Mr. Livingston, and tell the latter that we hope to have the pleasure of seeing him and Mrs. Livingston at our house on their return...". Together five pieces, in very good conditions with light soiling, the expected folds with minor separations.$400-600
