ALICE B. TOKLAS
(1877-1967) Expatriate American hostess and author in pre-World War II Paris who was the intimate life partner and companion of author Gertrude Stein for nearly forty years, serving as her secretary, cook, confidant, and lover. Scarce A.L.S. "Alice Toklas", 1p. 8vo., Paris, June 26, 1955, penned in her fine, tiny hand on the verso of a postcard to Mr. and Mrs. Leo Perper, in French. Regarding the celebrations and publicity surrounding the 75th birthday of their mutual friend, Carl Van Vechten, she writes: "...What kind people you are to remember me...Carl's birthday noticed by the New Republic! the dissociated Press!! And hundreds ofnewspapers!!! is public fire works. What could the party at home have been. He has been in the week since then probably recovering for there hasn't been a line from him. Have a happy summer...". Very light toning, overall very good condition.
