Description:

ALFRED WUNNENBERG
(1891 - 1963) German Waffen-SS general, fought in the French and Russian campaigns in the 18th Army, later replaced Kurt Daluege as head of all German police. Awarded the Knights Cross with Oak Leaves, Swords and Diamonds. Rare war-date, fine content and association A.L.S. ‘Wunnenberg' 1p. oblong 8vo., ‘In active service' [n.p.], Dec. 24, 1941 on his blind-embossed letterhead to KURT DALEUGE (1897-1946), Chief of Security Police in SD Central Office, who succeeded Heydrich as Deputy Protector of Bohemia and Moravia. In part: ‘...I am writing to express my warmest thanks for the congratulations which you sent me on the occasion of the award to me of the Knight's Cross. I assure you that I shall do my duty in the future to uphold the reputation of the police to the fullest measure…'. Initialed at top by Daluege, as well as by ULRICH GREIFELT (1896-1949), German Chief of Staff of the Reich Commissioner for the Consolidation of German Nationhood, instrumental in the forced relocation of Eastern populations. In February 1942, while serving on Himmler's staff, he wrote a directive accusing the Polish government of seizing ethnic German children and ordered orphans who 'looked' German to be forcefully examined by the SS Race and Settlement Office before undergoing extensive psychological study. Those that were racially acceptable were sent to German boarding schools and made available for adoption by the families of SS members. Appears trimmed at bottom, else very good and boldly signed.
