(1835 - 1911) Union brigadier general who held the "Bloody Angle" against Pickett's charge at Gettysburg. Rare, good content war-date A.L.S. as A. A. Provost Marshal General, 4pp. 8vo., New York, July 15 [1864] to "Folsom". In part: "...Give the saddle to Knox. Am glad the mare is sold...I was about to come down to 200.00 for her saddle included but she is worth 250...I send the Req. for Forage. One horse for July Two for June. My head has healed up but the sun hurts me & makes my head swim...I dare not go to the field yet...I am very sorry to think that you may leave me...You have all my confidence and respect...Simms is partially paralyzed. I will send his Requisition approved. Steele’s I will forward to New Haven. I am feeling as if most of the good officers of the 1st Brigade are gone. I really loved abbot..." Webb was still bothered by the wound he received at Spotsylvania Court House where he was hit by a bullet that passed through the corner of his right eye and came out his ear, but did not impair his mental abilities. The wound resulted in a false report that he had been killed and his death was reported in the New York Times.
