Description:

(1823 - 1868) Union brigadier general who served in the Shenandoah and in the Union's race to Appomattox. A.E.S. as colonel, cut from a document, "Camp Suffolk, Va., Jan. 23, 1863. Only a week before his valiant defense in the face of Corcoran's retreat at the Battle of Deserted House, Gibbs recommends the appointment of a "Mr. Cummins[?]" as a benefit to the brigade and its staff. A bit light in places, else very good. In action against Roger Pryor's men on January 30, Corcoran quarreled with Gibbs over the disposition of troops and placed him under arrest. Gibbs was soon proved correct, however, when Corcoran's own brigade broke and ran under heavy artillery fire. While Corcoran left the field to try to reorganize his brigade, three regiments decided to charge the Confederates on their own initiative. Though under arrest and without a horse or gun, Gibbs grabbed a flag and led the charge, driving the Confederates into the woods...and the retrenched Corcoran regiments.
