Description:

ALEXANDER "SANDIE" PENDLETON
(1840-1864) Stonewall Jackson's youngest staff member and aide and it is said that Jackson loved him like a son. Pendleton was killed a few days short of his 24th birthday while trying to rally the troops at Fisher's Hill. Important field order written to Brig. Gen. Charles Sidney Winder just hours before his death in combat, and very likely in his pocket when he fell! The letter, an A.L.S., 1p. 8vo., is sent to Winder from Jackson's headquarters, Aug. 9, 1862, "4 AM". Pendleton writes: "...Gen'l Taliaferro's note in reference to appearance of the enemy is received. Gen. Lawton is left as guard to the Div. [?]. Gen. Jackson directs that you assume command of the three remaining brigades of the Division. Respt. A. S. Pendleton". Text is quite light but remains legible, a repaired fold split. For the previous two weeks, Winder had been all but incapacitated by illness, but as Jackson later noted, Winder's "ardent patriotism and military pride could bear no such resistant". The general left his sick bed to lead his command in the Aug. 9, 1862 battle against Gen. Nathaniel Banks' Union corps at Cedar Mountain. As requested here, Winder took command of the divisions and while supervising the fire of cannon of the Rockbridge Artillery, he was cut down. His last words: "My poor, poor wife...my little pets...".
