Description:

5TH NEW YORK ARTILLERY REGIMENT FLAG
5th New York artillery regiment flag, reconstructed. Present are the original embroidered elements of the flag, including the Seal of New York which includes Liberty and Justice and an American eagle spreading its wings above a world globe. Liberty's left foot treads on a crown and Justice is blindfolded and holds a sword in one hand and a scale in the other. The word "EXCELSIOR" is embroidered within, and a banner below reads: "Presented by the City of New York to the 5th Reg. of New York State Art.". Also present are four stars from the original banner, as well as the gold bullion fringe which once surrounded three sides of the flag. Most of the original color in the original embroidery has faded away. The recovered embroidery has been expertly re-sewn to a new backing of cream-colored fabric and the ensemble has been set into an attractive frame. In April, 1862 the 5th N.Y. Heavy Artillery mustered in in New York, its members coming from throughtout the city and from upstate and New Jersey as well. Most of the regiment's service was in the defense of Washington, at Harpers Ferry and in West Virginia, though several companies were overrun and captured at Cedar Creek, later being paroled.
