ALEXANDER P. STEWART
(1821 - 1908) Confederate major general who commanded at Shiloh, Chickamauga, and Atlanta, and replaced Polk after that general's death. A.L.S. on Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park Commissions letterhead, 1p. 4to., Tennessee, Jan. 22, 1892, to ex-CSA General Marcus J. Wright concerning General Braxton Bragg. In part: '...This commission wishes to ascertain on which side of the Chickamauga River...Genl. Bragg's Head. Div. were located; and also, whether or not he changed his location during the battle of Chickamauga, or previous to his removal to Red House Ford [?]...Do you know the name and address of any other officer of Genl. Bragg's staff...at that time who could give us the information...We will be obliged for any help you can give us in the matter...'. The letter has been mounted to a sturdier paper for preservation. Fine. Wright was at the time compiling the Official Records of the war.
