Description:

ALEXANDER MACH
(1902 - 1980) Slovak nationalist politician who belonged to the non-clerical wing of the Slovak People's Party, the more pro-Nazi of the party's two factions. A close associate of Vojtech Tuka and Ferdinand Durcanský, he served as Interior Minister and also as leader of the Hlinka Guard which operated against Jews, Czechs, Hungarians, the Left, and the opposition. Rare, fine content T.L.S. on "Commander in Chief" letterhead, 1p. large 4to., Bratislava, Oct. 10, 1939 to Gen. Franz Barkhausen, then heading the German military mission to Slovakia. Mach pens a very flattering letter to the German general, expressing Czechoslovakia's "great honor" at having the "brave, patriotic" German soldiers "sacrifice themselves" for his nation. Very good.
