Description:

ALEXANDER I
(1777 - 1825) Russian Czar whose greatest achievement was the destruction of the armies under Napoleon leading to the abdication of the Emperor and Russian participation in the Congress of Vienna. Manuscript L.S., the text likely in the hand of his mother, MARIA FEDEROVNA (1759-1828), 1p. 4to., Tsarske-Selo, July 26, 1819, in English to British abolitionist Thomas Clarkson. In part: "…I have duly received your letter, by which you express the sympathetic feelings of your heart, occasioned by the melancholy even, which so unexpectedly [struck] my family, in depriving me of a much beloved sister…your Christian and real consolations, to the almighty source to which I have myself accustomed to look up in every painful circumstance of my life…be assured of my unfeigned esteem for you…". Signature a bit light, with an early notation in another hand at bottom indicating that the text was in Federovna's hand. Thomas Clarkson was widely known in Great Britain for his anti-slavery campaigns. In 1818, he met with Alexander, "to secure his influence with the allied sovereigns at the approaching European congress in favor of the suppression of the slave trade throughout their dominions" (DNB IV, 455).
