ALEXANDER HAMILTON Union major, an aide-de-camp and grandson of the great American statesman of the same name. Fine content war-date A.L.S., 3pp. 4to., Washington, June 6, 1861 to his father. In part: "...On Sunday night at 12 o'C. I captured a secessionist who was tampering with our soldiers. He proved to be the brother of a rebel officer late of our army & we elicited important information from him...[I] marched a regiment on Monday night into the rear of Georgetown. On Tuesday Gen'l Mansfield employed me on secret service and I succeeded so well that I captured a vessel loaded with loaded with ordnance - howitzers - muskets - ammunition and stores laying below Georgetown. I put a guard on board of her and today we are to search her as we learn there is a secession flag on board...we know she is owned in Alexandria & commanded by a Secession Captain...Gen. [Winfield] Scott is very well. I just left his office...". Very good.
