ALEXANDER GRAHAM BELL
(1847 - 1922) American inventor of the telephone, formed the Bell Telephone Company, and established the Volta Laboratory which produced numerous related inventions and improvements on existing technology. Fine association A.L.S. "A. Graham Bell" 2pp. 8vo., Salem, Mass., Feb. 2, 1874, to deaf poet Alice C. Jennings about her attending the National College in Washington. In part: "...I enclose a letter...from President [deaf advocate Thomas H.] Gallaudet and I shall be glad to know what you decide upon. I think that, with your abilities, and desire for study, you should consider it a duty to strive to attain the highest culture possible for you in this country...". Alice Jennings was one of Bell's pupils at the School of Vocal Physiology and Mechanics of Speech that Bell founded in Boston in 1872. In their volume Education of Deaf Children (1892), Thomas Gallaudet and Bell praise her poetry. Two miniscule holes at folds, very good.
