ALEX NORTH
(1910-1991) American composer best known for his film scores including "A Streetcar Named Desire", "Death of a Salesman", "The Misfits". "Les Miserables" and many more. Fine content T.L.S. "Alex" 2pp. 4to., Camp Joseph T. Robinson, Ark., Feb. 6, 1943 to playwright Alfred Kreymborg (1883-1966) updating him on his life in basic training in the U.S. Army and his struggle to maintain his musical activities. He writes, in part: "...I am applying for officer's candidate school, to become an officer but to serve in my best capacity, and that is, music...I've already been interviewed for a cadre job as teacher but that means starting out as a mealy corporal. But seriously, if the other thing doesn't come through I'm going to take it. Some rehearsals are called on a day when the Battalion has just completed a 20 mile hike...Under these adverse conditions I have been able to work up the 'Nation' and some other things. I'm meeting a singer tomorrow to start on Valley Forge to be song at the Little Rock Country Club next Sunday for the blue bloods of L[ittle]R[ock]. I'm also a good church member, playing the organ and having my quartette sing spirituals for the services. What are the developments on 'Clover' and the OWI business...I looked up a couple volumes of your friend Gould at the library here and after reading some of his confederate drivel, decided against looking him up... ". Lightly toned, very good condition. With a T.L.S. from Herbert E. Marks from Edward B. Marks Music Publishing, 1p. 4t5o., New York, Apr. 23, 1942 concerning permission on lyrics from the song "There's a Nation". Usual folds, else very good. Two pieces.
