(AERO CLUB OF AMERICA) AVIATION RIBBONS, PINS, AND MEDALS
Lot of commemorative items related to the Aero Club of America. Includes seven Aerial League of America lapel pins, each approx. 1/2" in diameter. All are marked on the verso: "The Whitehead & Hoag Co., Newark, NJ" WITH: A blue silk member''s ribbon, 9" x 1 1/4" from the Ben Franklin Aeronautical Society, featuring a portrait of Franklin. This was an early ballooning club which later joined with other organizations to form the Aero Club of Pennsylvania. WITH: Bronze medallion, 2 1/2" in diameter, commemorating the 13th annual Aero Club of America Banquet, held on Feb. 19, 1919, at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York. It is engraved on the face with an image of an eagle and globe. WITH: Bronze plaque, approx. 4" x 3", given to HENRY WOODHOUSE (1884-1970), president of the Aero Club of America, for his birthday on Jun. 23, 1920, by a Mr. and Mrs. Bartlett. It bears the inscription: "This medal... we give to you on this you day of birth, because you seem so splendidly to summon us to dream with you the dream of wings." It is decorated on the face with an Angel of Providence, flanked by a dirigible and an early airplane, with the French legend: "Navigation Aerienne" ("Aerial Navigation"). The verso is inscribed with the legends: "Le Reve Concoit" ("The Dream Conceives") and "La Science Realise" ("Science Realizes"), accompanied by images depicting a philosopher observing birds in flight and a mechanic working on an aircraft engine. WITH A red, white, and blue silk ribbon, 2 1/4" x 5 1/4", identifying the holder as an: "Official Guest to Welcome Coste & Bellonte, Paris-New York Flight, Curtiss Airport, Valley Stream, L(ong) I(sland) N(ew) Y(ork)". In 1930, the French fliers Diudonne Costes and Maurice Bellonte became the first to fly a heavier-than-air machine from Europe to the United States. This ribbon celebrates the termination of that flight in Long Island. Mounted on cream card. All are very good.
