Description:

ADOLF HITLER LETTER OF STATE TO EMPEROR HIROHITO
ADOLF HITLER (1889 - 1945) Fuhrer of Germany and Nazi Party leader, Hitler's bloody rise to power, his military seizure of most of Europe and North Africa and his genocidal racial policies culminated in suicide in his Berlin bunker as Russian troops approached. Important content, very rare and fine association signed manuscript letter of state, 2pp. 8.25 x 11.5 in., 'Fuhrer Headquarters', Jan. 6, 1943 to HIROHITO (1901-1989), Emperor of Japan. Hitler officially recalls his Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Japan, EUGEN OTT, for 'other purposes', and is pleased that the emperor 'succeeded in gaining confidence and satisfaction during the performance of his mission there...' Boldly signed by Hitler at conclusion, and co-signed by JOACHIM VON RIBBENTROP (1893-1946), Reich Foreign Minister. Fine condition. The appointment of Eugen Ott (1889-1977) had turned out to be one of Hitler's greatest blunders. In 1934, Ott was sent to Tokyo as military attache at the German embassy. In early September 1940, Heinrich Georg Stahmer arrived in Tokyo to assist Ott in negotiating the Tripartite Pact with Japan. Stahmer later replaced Ott as ambassador when RICHARD SORGE (1895-1944), who had been working for Ott in Japan as an agent for the Abwehr, was unmasked as a Soviet spy in late 1941. Sorge was so entirely trusted by Ott that he was allowed access to top secret cables from Berlin in the embassy. That trust was the main foundation for Sorge's success as a Red Army spy. He provided information about Hitler's plan to attack the Soviet Union. Then, in mid-September 1941, he informed the Soviets that Japan would not attack the Soviet Union in the near future. A month later, Sorge was arrested in Japan for espionage. He was tortured, forced to confess, tried and hanged in November 1944. Ott was sacked after Sorge had been in jail for 13 months, and he left Tokyo and went to Peking, China for the rest of the war.
