Description:

ADOLF HITLER HONORS I. G. FARBEN - MAKERS OF 'ZYKLON-B'
A truly horrific war-date partly-printed D.S., 1p. 17 x 24 in., Berlin, May 1, 1942, in which Adolf Hitler recognizes the infamous chemical and pharmaceutical manufacturing giant I.G.Farben A.G. as a 'National Socialist Model Business' - this, the same company that manufactured 'Zyklon-B', the canned crystals which turned into hydrogen cyanide when exposed to air, and which was used to ruthlessly kill millions of Jews and other 'undesirables' in the Nazis' death camps. The document, lithographed in black and orange with gold accents, reads in full: 'DER FUHRER I bestow on the recommendation of the Reich Organization Leader of the NSDAP and head of the German Labor Front J.G. Farbenindustrie AG Leverkusen plant today on the national holiday of the German people the name NATIONAL SOCIALIST MODEL BUSINESS The award is based on the services in compliance with my decree of August 29, 1936 on National Socialist model companies. With the presentation of this certificate, the joint venture receives the right to fly the flag of the Deutsche Arbeitsfront with a golden [cog] and golden fringes. Berlin, 1. May 1942' Hitler's original, hand-signed signature appears at bottom, in an indented space. The entire text is surrounded by a blind-embossed border with a Reichsadler and mobile swastika appearing at top. Vertical and horizontal folds, one traversing the signature, some light soiling, else very good. It was considered a high honor to receive the designation 'Model Business", and such companies received large, special flags to fly witnessing the honor bestowed upon them The I.G. Farben company has been headquartered at Leverkusen since 1912. The I.G. Farben Trial was the sixth of the twelve trials for war crimes the U.S. authorities held in their occupation zone in Germany (Nuremberg) after the end of World War II. Company executives were charged with planning, preparation, initiation, and waging of wars of aggression and invasions of other countries; plundering and spoliation of occupied territories, and the seizure of plants in Austria, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Norway, France, and Russia; participation in the enslavement and deportation to slave labor on a gigantic scale of concentration camp inmates and civilians in occupied countries, and of prisoners of war, and the mistreatment, terrorization, torture, and murder of enslaved persons; membership in a criminal organization, the SS; and acting as leaders in a conspiracy to commit the crimes mentioned in the indictments. Over half of the defendants were convicted.
