ABRAHAM LINCOLN
(1809-1865) Sixteenth President of the United States who led the Union through the Civil War and emancipated the slaves, assassinated. Important D.S. "Abraham Lincoln" as President, 1p. folio on vellum, Washington, Aug. 5, 1861, an ornately engraved naval commission appointing "Andrew. H. Foote...a Captain in the Navy from the 29th of June 1861" Countersigned by GIDEON WELLES as Secretary of the Navy. On August 30, 1861 Foote took command of the Mississippi River Squadron where he participated in the successful attacks on Forts Henry and Donaldson. In conjunction with General Pope's Army of the Mississippi, he would prove instrumental in the attack on Island No. 10. Promoted to rear admiral, Foote departed the Mississippi to take command of the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron. Physically and mentally exhausted from the Mississippi campaign, he died after a short illness in New York while preparing to assume his new command. The news of his death was a great shock to his Union admirers. Light toning at margins, engrossment and Wells' signature a tad light, usual folds, else fine condition.
