Description:

JAMES BUCHANAN
(1791 - 1868) Fifteenth President of the United States whose hands-off attitude toward states' rights directly contributed to the start of the Civil War. A.L.S. 1p. 4to., Wheatland, Pa., Apr. 27, 1853, to Henry B. Hunt, in part: "…I have received your favor requesting to address Governor [William] Bigler a note recommending your appointment as a Notary Public for the City of Philadelphia. It has never been my practice to interfere in…local appointments for that City, leaving this to the Democrats directly interested; yet if your brother should deem a letter from me necessary to secure the appointment, (which I do not believe), I shall address such a letter to the Governor…". Lightly penned, glue stains to verso, unevenly toned with prominent folds, very good.
