(1809 - 1865) Sixteenth President of the United States who led the Union through the Civil War and emancipated the slaves, assassinated. Fine A.L.S. as President, 1p. 8vo., "Executive Mansion", Sept. 29, 1864, to Gideon Welles, whom Lincoln addresses as "Hon. Sec. of the Navy". In full: "About a year & a half ago I almost, if not quite, promised Mr. Barry Williams that his nephew James Kelly should be sent to the Naval School. I shall be really obliged if you can now find a place to put him in. If not now, let it be done as soon as it can be. Yours truly, A. Lincoln". According to Basler, Kelly received an at-large appointment by the President on Oct. 5, 1864. Minor central folds with light toning and minor foxing, with fine preservation of signature. Trimmed very slightly at margin, half-inch closed tear at top margin affecting one word of text, two very small chips at right margin professionally repaired, generally very good.
