Description:

GEORGE CLINTON (1739 - 1812) Vice President of the United States (1805-12) and Continental Congressman who opposed ratification of the Constitution. Important content A.L.S. as Vice President, 2pp. 4to., Washington, D.C., Mar. 11, 1807 to his son-in-law and former French ambassador to the United States, Edmond-Charles Genêt. After sharing news about family and the weather, Clinton mentions his vice-presidential predecessor, AARON BURR, then suspected of treasonous plotting. It was alleged that Burr had been assembling a private army with the intention of invading Florida, New Orleans, or Mexico, or that he planned to lead a secession of western states from the Union. Burr denied all these charges. A grand jury was convened in Natchez, Mississippi, and after hearing the evidence against him, Burr was cleared. Clinton passes on this news, in part: '...The last Accounts from Burr is that the Grand Jury at the Natches found no Bill agst him; but on the Contrary presented the Gen'l Government as acting improperly against him. On this he immediately departed without waiting for a formal discharge from his Recognizance, upon which the Gov'r issued a Proclamation offering $2000 for his apprehension. But this Bird had flown. I have not time to make a single remark...' This letter is lightly toned with prominent folds, and a repaired fold split, with a small section of light-blue discoloration. Generally very good. Soon, more information came to light about Burr's questionable activities, and his case was brought before Supreme Court Chief Justice John Marshall and made to plea his case. Despite Jefferson's desire to obtain a conviction, Burr was once again acquitted.
